The Basics of Kirtan
Kirtan (keer-tahn) is a devotional singing practice that comes from India. It’s basically chanting in a call and response song form. I love, love, love kirtan. Think of it as a spiritual sing-a-long. It’s similar to the way many religions sing hymns as a group and there is a spiritual connection which is enhanced by having the group do it together. There are usually a few musicians leading it and they will often describe what you are chanting and what it means (since it’s usually in Sanskrit). The music is really good, too! They often use a variety of instruments like a harmonium, drums, and guitar. If you’re looking for a fun, spiritual way to spend an evening- try kirtan, you might be surprised at how much you like it. The group energy can be really powerful and peaceful.I’ve been to kirtans where it’s super mellow and meditative, and others that rock out, where the people are dancing and it’s a fun, lively atmosphere. The ones I have been to take place at a yoga studio, so bring a cushion, blanket or something that will allow you be comfortable sitting on the floor.
